An efficient Doppler-shifted electron-cyclotron maser oscillator

Titel: An efficient Doppler-shifted electron-cyclotron maser oscillator
Auteur: Vomvoridis†, J. L.
Verschenen in: International journal of electronics
Paginering: Jaargang 53 (1982) nr. 6 pagina's 555-571
Jaar: 1982-12-01
Inhoud: The electron.cyclotren maser intraction is investigated for the case of a beam with γβ0 = n(γ-1), where n = Kc/ω. This choice makes the total beam kinetic energy available to the interaction (rather than only the transverse energy, as in the gyrotron). Study of the phase plots has identified the controlling combinations of the parameters. The interaction efficiency has been shown to depend on only throe reduced quantities, equivalent to beam energy, frequency mismatch, and interaction length, in terms of which the efficiency has boon calculated in all limits. The main features of the interaction include : (i) a high efficiency, in excess of 20%, with a very wide- choice in the parameters ; (ii) compatibility with highly relativistic beams ; (iii) a. cancellation of the relativistic gyrofrequency reduction by the Doppler shift; and, (iv) suitability for a wide cavity, which would allow a high input beam current. In summary, this interaction can be use-d for efficient generation of high power (20 MW) and short wavelength (2 mm) radiation in a compact device with low radiation field amplitudes (100 kV/cm).
