The initial amplitudes of permitted waves at the junction of a cylindrical interaction region and a conical entry taper are calculated using four initial conditions. The observed transition from amplification to oscillation in a reflected wave amplifier can be understood by considering the ω-k diagram for the system. This behaviour suggests a general condition for stability of this type of amplifier. |
