Thin evaporated films of polypropylene sandwiched between metal electrodes arc studied, and for films of thickness 2000 Å or greater and with copper as the electrode material the current-voltage characteristic in linear upto high applied electric fields and breakdown strengths of over 50 MV cm-1 are found. For many formed plastic materials the maximum breakdown strengths of upto 10 MV cm-1 are reported, so that evaporated polypropylene may well form a useful new dielectric material. |
