Inhoud: The report is concerned with optimization procedures for monotron oscillators, i.e. oscillators consisting of a single resonant cavity with a specified longitudinal r.f. field distribution in the interaction gap. For arbitrary gap length and space-charge density in the beam the optimum r.f. field distribution yielding the maximum absolute value of the negative small-signal electronic conductance has been established by variational methods. The optimum field distribution thus established results in the smallest starting current that can be obtained by oscillators of this type The optimum field distribution, which in general is a superposition of two sinusoidal standing waves in synchronism with the slow and fast space-charge waves, is shown in a number of graphs for various d.c. gap transit angles and space-charge densities The maximum absolute value of the negative electronic conductance associated with the optimum field distribution is only 6·6% higher than that obtained by a pure sinusoidal r.f. field distribution, which therefore for all practical purposes represents a very good approximation to the optimum distribution.
