Super-regenerative operation produces an inherent noise degradation because the r.f. bandwidth is larger than the bandwidth over which the modulation on an incoming signal can be reproduced. The degree of degradation depends somewhat on the characteristics of the signal, but for usual communication purposes amounts to an added noise temperature given by the product of the input temperature and the fractional difference of the two bandwidths. Used as a radiometer, super-regenerative operation. reduces the sensitivity by the square root of the ratio of the two bandwidths. |
