One hundred and fifty years after 'The Introduction': on the importance of being autonomous

Titel: One hundred and fifty years after 'The Introduction': on the importance of being autonomous
Auteur: van Maanen, Hans
Verschenen in: The international journal of cultural policy
Paginering: Jaargang 14 (2008) nr. 3 pagina's 281-297
Jaar: 2008-08
Inhoud: In the public policy of European countries, there is an increasing tendency to grant subsidies on the basis of criteria extrinsic to art, instrumental in nature. This generally means bypassing the autonomous value of art, and above all the scientific debate about the relationship between works of art and their environment. Exactly 150 years ago, however, Marx thoroughly examined - in his Introduction to the Grundrisse der Kritik der politischen Okonomie - the complex relationship between production and consumption, including that of art. This text will be used here as a frame of reference for a closer examination of the relativity of artistic autonomy, as discussed in the work of Bourdieu and Luhmann. In the process, a theoretical foundation will be laid for a policy-related reflection on the structure of the art world, in particular as regards the role played therein by the means of distribution.
