The aim of this paper is to characterize a conspicuous phenomenon which occurs in the transients of binary distillation systems in correspondence with step changes of vapour flow-rate. The phenomenon, here referred to as asymmetry, is analysed by means of a properly defined asymmetry function. An analytical expression is given for the asymmetry function and its main properties are pointed out. The validity of the results is then checked by a number of simulated tests. |
