Title: Development of a knowledge-based system for balancing complex mixed model assembly lines

Contents: Paced flow lines are commonly used in the manufacture of mass produced goods. Balancing of complex lines, as found in the final assembly tracks of the motor industry, is a manual and very time consuming task which makes it difficult to react quickly to changes in market demand for product volume/mix. An industrial engineer develops the balance based on his knowledge of the product and processes, taking account of technological constraints and business objectives; undocumented heuristic procedures based on experience are used to produce an efficient allocation of manpower in the line. This paper describes the development of a knowledge-based system, which has been shown to produce efficient balances. It incorporates complex features that are not considered in current approaches found in research literature.
