'What is truly great is accessible to all' - Kierkegaard, Fear and Trembling In this paper I am interested in the ordering of those values we seek to develop in ourselves and the children we bring up and teach. I focus here upon values which are not themselves dependent upon a religious view of life. These are values appropriated by many people living in the essentially non-religious culture of late-modernity for whom religions have lost the authority they may once have had. My position claims that spiritual values have meaning giving them authority over non-spiritual values. The highest spiritual values belong to a category which can be called 'the love of the world”. I hope to make clear how this category is to be distinguished from other less significant, yet more commonly endorsed, values, and what its significance might be for the spiritual development of adults and children. On the wider front, any system of value which fails to exalt love of the world as its supreme focus is destructive because it threatens the present and the future of the world. |
