Inhoud: The contemporary fascination for Christian monasticism is proving to be an interesting phenomenon. Many people from a whole range of different backgrounds and beliefs are increasingly finding monastic settings helpful for their own personal and spiritual renewal. A more meditative and contemplative approach to spirituality seems to be in demand. This article argues that Christianity has much to learn from the Buddhist religion in responding to this demand. For centuries Buddhism has maintained the monastic ideal at its core, its history reflecting how crucial asceticism is to its identity and survival. Not only has the sangha provided a unique setting in which both lay and ordained have found sanctuary and inspiration, but it has provided a successful model of how monasticism can remain both sacred and accessible.
