Inhoud: One of the most contentious issues between Christians and Muslims has been the attitude that both sides demonstrate towards the religious life in the other faith. Easy stereotypes have been employed on both sides, but what is the truth? What is the reality behind these accusations of drunkenness and sexual licentiousness? By exploring the facts and looking at the attitudes of the Church Fathers and Sufi poets, can we see any common ground between the religious lives of these two faiths or are they as diametrically opposed as the polemics suggest? If the common experiences of both faiths are compared it appears that the two ways of life are far closer than they may at first appear. This article seeks to dispel some of these misconceptions in an attempt to demonstrate the fact that it is often our similarities that divide us.
