Eastern Orthodox Perspectives on Church-State Relations and Religion and Politics in Modern Jerusalem

Title: Eastern Orthodox Perspectives on Church-State Relations and Religion and Politics in Modern Jerusalem
Author: Roussos, Sotiris
Appeared in: International Journal for the Study of the Christian Church
Paging: Volume 5 (2005) nr. 2 pages 103-122
Year: 2005-07
Contents: The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem is arguably the most important single Christian institution in the Holy Land. It has seen itself as a 'bulwark' of Hellenic Christianity, and the constitution and make-up of the Patriarchate has been Greek. This has created conflict and tensions between the senior Greek clergy and the predominantly Palestinian Arab Orthodox community. The Patriarchate has operated at times a controversial approach to Church-State relations in Jerusalem. The question of the ownership and sale of land, in a conflict situation where land is one of the principal motives and issues, has led the Patriarchate into conflict with other Christian churches and its own Arab Orthodox community.
