The aims of mathematics education as described by a number of publications in England during the past 100 years are analysed and discussed. The development of a series of points-of-view about the purposes of the study of mathematics is shown. This development indicates that some changes which are thought of as new are not, and also that the notion of a social dimension to the perceived justifications for teaching mathematics is gradually emerging. |
