Contents: This article illustrates DOCET (Didactics On Computer: an Environment for Tutoring), a shell for defining Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) in different domains. We describe in detail the underlying theory and the design choices, discussing how the system works through an extensive example. DOCET can generate ITS that can manage whole courses, adapting their behavior to the student's needs and preferences. DOCET embeds general pedagogical knowledge, defined once for all and common to all the possible applications. Moreover, we defined knowledge structures to frame the domain specific knowledge at different levels of abstraction. This makes all the elements of a course easier to define. We identified a set of features describing a domain, and we designed DOCET considering all those features: The system can be used to develop ITS working on courses in different types of domains, since both the pedagogical knowledge and the knowledge structures are domain general. The implementation of the system is highly modular and it has been realized using a standard language (Common LISP). At present, the same code runs on different machines in different environments.
