The Riesz energy of N points on the unit sphere is the sum of all Riesz distances 1/rs, s>0, r is the Euclidean distance, among the given points. We show that the normalised optimal energy of N points on the unit sphere interacting through a Riesz potential 1/rs varies from the energy integral, the main term of the asymptotics, at most by a constant times the power N-1+s/d which is the correct order of the second term of the asymptotics. This result is valid over the whole range 0<s<d. |
