In this paper systems of linear scalar partial differential equations for two functions in two independent variables are considered. We are concerned with the hyperbolic case; the systems are related to their characteristic coordinates (canonical systems). We pose a characteristical initial value problem (Darboux problem) for linear, inhomogeneous right-hand sides. This problem is explicitly solved with the help of a two-dimensional Laplace transform and yields, to some extent, an elementary solution formula for this class of problems. Concepts such as the Riemann function or an adjunct system are not required. |
