Titel: Use of two approaches to measure children's motivations to fish in Norway
Auteur: Aas, Øystein

Paginering: Jaargang 1 (1996) nr. 3 pagina's 15-28
Jaar: 1996
Inhoud: This paper reports on the use of two different methods to ascertain why 11- to 16-year-old children fish in Norway. The first method employed open-ended questions to determine what the children liked best and disliked about fishing. The second method used fixed list, multiple-item questions to solicit information about the relative importance to the children of 10 different reasons for fishing. The two studies yielded similar results about the primary reason why children fish, but the second study provided more in-depth information about their multiple motivations. In the first study, children's motivations to fish focused strongly on the desirability of catching fish and the undesirability of not catching fish. The second study revealed that many reasons or motives were important, but that catching fish was most important. Motivations differed with children's age, gender and place of residence. Implications for sport fishery management and needed future research are discussed.
