Title: Sustainable urban development: The challenges of the Brundtland commission—a turning point for urban planning?
Author: Næss, Petter
Appeared in: Housing, theory and society
Paging: Volume 6 (1989) nr. 1 pages 45-49
Year: 1989
Contents: The World Commission on Environment and Development states that the energy consumption in our part of the world should be reduced significantly, especially the burning of fossil fuels. This demands an urban planning aiming to reduce the need of energy for transport. Today's dispersed and car-dependent urban development is not consistent with the Commission's global challenges. The Third World also needs other models for urban planning than the polluting and resource-wasting cities of the industrial countries.
