Data from a questionnaire answered by a heterogenous sample of 203 Swedish adults showed that the evaluation of different housing attributes was largely mediated by beliefs about their consequences for (a) the performance of everyday activities, (b) the attainment of various life values, and (c) the acquisition of personal and non-personal resources, as well as by the evaluation of these perceived consequences. The evaluations of the housing attributes and their consequences, and the beliefs about what these consequences might be, varied substantially depending on the age, sex, marital status, and size of the home town of the respondents. Despite these differences, the evaluations of the housing attributes could be almost equally well predicted in all subgroups. The belief structure found to underlie the evaluations of the housing attributes was, at least partly, validated by correlations obtained between the respondents, ratings of their own housing conditions and ratings of actual (a) performance of activities, (b) attainment of life values, and (c) possession of resources.
