This paper considers the possibility of using film to explore aspects of housing. It presents a justification for using film to explore housing phenomena and provides a number of possible examples. It is argued that particular films can be used to explore specific problems. As an example of this approach David Fincher's film, Panic Room is used as a means of critiquing Gaston Bachelard's (1969) benign vision of the home as space for privacy, security and intimacy. The paper concludes by asserting that Panic Room offers what could be seen as negative justification for Bachelard's stressing of the significance of privacy and security. |
