Housing Investment Fluctuations: an International Comparison

Titel: Housing Investment Fluctuations: an International Comparison
Auteur: Ball, Michael
Morrison, Tanya
Verschenen in: Housing, theory and society
Paginering: Jaargang 17 (2000) nr. 1 pagina's 3-13
Jaar: 2000-07-06
Inhoud: This article examines whether there is greater stability in modern housing markets compared with those in the 1920s and 1930s and pre-1914 by looking at the volatility of investment in housing across a number of countries over the long term. It also confirms the view that housing investment is particularly volatile compared with other sectors of the economy. Surprisingly, there is only limited evidence of greater stability in housing markets since the 1950s; instead, what seems to have happened is a general return to the scale of fluctuations prior to 1914 after the tumultuous inter-war period. There is also no evidence of increased instability in housing markets since the early 1980s, despite widespread moves to liberalise housing markets.
