Radon is a radioactive gas whose presence in homes may imply a considerable risk of lung cancer. Radon contaminated homes are not uncommon in, for example, Finland, Norway. Sweden, and the United States. The main reasons are the presence of bedrock radioactivity causing radon intrusion via soil gases or water supply, and the use of radioactive building materials. In this paper, a simple hedonic model and a data set which contains market prices and descriptions of single-family houses in a Swedish region are employed for the estimation of households' maximum willingness to pay (WTP) for a reduction of the radon concentration. For mean values of household incomes and housing prices, the estimated WTP is SEK 21 300. The WTP figures in this study are similar to those of an earlier market study applied to the case of radon. |
