Social science research on power in urban change processes is predominantly descriptive and lacking in terms of theoretical interpretation and comparability. In this article a comprehensive theoretical model for comparative research in this field is suggested. Structural and relational dimensions of power are combined with episodic moments of agency and outcome with help of the following heuristic concepts: Urban arena, agenda, parties, actors, interests, resources, action strategy and outcome. These concepts are analysed within a context of economic, political and cultural conditions by way of a qualitative, inductive research approach focussing on the complex dynamics of urban change projects. A methodological design is also outlined in order to guide the systematic, in-depth analysis of carefully selected cases of urban change. The comparative analysis, which utilizes recent developments in qualitative, computer-supported data analysis, aims at generating a contextual typology of empirically and theoretically grounded structures of power relations in urban change projects.
