Experiences from an experiment with telework and internal communication within a low-rise urban housing estate are presented. First the concept of telework is discussed on the basis of the current debate and on the demand for a new concept reflecting empirical findings. Then the actual findings are presented: did the dwellers use the new possibilities; for internal messages, or for work only? Did telework reduce the working time? Where was the preferred working place—in the telecenter or at home? Did the users work on-line or were the traditional floppy disks sufficient for most purposes? What were the attitudes of the employers? Finally the perspectives go by a little further, and inspired by experience from experiments with information technologies in two other cultural settings, the concept of teleworking is broken down into three different types of telework each related to different cultural ways of life. |
