The mobilization of American industry in World War II was infused with the rhetoric of mass production, yet most aircraft factories relied on more traditional processes that allowed for quick production acceleration and frequent design changes. This article examines the rise of the mass production narrative through the figure of Henry Ford and his B-24 bomber plant, and counters with the examples of Grumman and Eastern Aircraft, two companies that largely shunned Detroit-style production methods yet manufactured the bulk of the US Navy's carrier aircraft. |
