Jaar: 1995
Inhoud: In the process of modernization in Japan in the second half of the nineteenth century, political context at first was the main determinant in choosing the foreign models to build the navy and create educational institutions for training engineers in shipbuilding technology. However, this soon gave way to more pragmatic considerations to choose the 'best practice' technology, especially in the development of the shipbuilding industry. Furthermore, the foreign technologies thus adopted were often modified and improved, resulting in the production of technologies characteristically Japanese. This process of sampling, importing and improving foreign technologies became widespread practice and was sustained to this day. This is a factor underlying the competitiveness of Japanese industrial technologies demonstrated in the last few decades.
