Inhoud: The aim of this paper is to examine a specific example of transfer of scientific and technological knowledge and transnational exchanges between France and Russia in the early XIXth century, namely in the area of technical higher education. A historical choice of French educational models made by the Russian Empire in 1809 , at a crucial moment of Alexander I's policy of reform, resulted in the establishment, during the following half-century, under the direct and indirect influence of various French grandes ecoles, of an entire system of technical education, in the institutionalization of the engineering profession and in the creation of a state-wide independent national engineering school. The efficiency of this specific case of influence raises a lot of questions the author tries to answer: what were the historical motives for this choice? Why France and not another European country? How was this influence exercised? Who were its models, its principal agents and vehicles? What were its positive and negative results and its historical lessons?
