Colonial engineers and the 'cult of practicality': Themes and dimensions in the history of Australian engineering

Title: Colonial engineers and the 'cult of practicality': Themes and dimensions in the history of Australian engineering
Author: Macleod, Roy
Appeared in: History and technology
Paging: Volume 12 (1995) nr. 2 pages 147-162
Year: 1995
Contents: In the colonies of settlement, the practice of engineering acquires certain characteristics that distinguish its history from that of Europe and the United States. Often, these are shaped by the requirements of the land and its newly-founded cities. In Australia, instructive comparisons and contrasts arise that link, yet separate, local traditions from their British and American counterparts. This essay explores some theoretical and narrative dimensions of engineering history in Australia, as seen through the history of colonial engineering and its subsequent traditions during the period from first European settlement to ca. 1939.
