Technics, transformation of physical objects for the satisfaction of human needs, is as old as man. But systematic analysis of this sort of activity, the technological science which the French and the Germans call technology, appeared only in the second half of the 18th century. Greek and Roman reflexions on technics are scattered through the works of philosophers, architects and different commentators, but they never gave birth to a unified discipline. Technology (technological science) was cultivated since the end of the 18th century for about a hundred years. After a century of oblivion, this unitary discipline regains new vitality and its history is again becoming an object of interest. The aim of this paper is to sketch the rise and the early development of this systematic reflexion on tools, crafts and industrial production as a specific branch of human knowledge. |
