Paleoecology of crocodile and whale-bearing strata of oligocene age in North America

Inhoud: Sediments that accumulated along the coastline of southeastern North America during the late Paleogene lie just beneath the present land surface within the state of South Carolina. Recent discoveries in these deposits by the Charleston Museum, Charleston, South Carolina have brought to light a new vertebrate assemblage. These materials are derived from two local stratigraphic units, the Ashley and Chandler Bridge formations of late Oligocene (Chattian) age. The common occurrence of a large estuarine crocodile (Eosuchia) and several cetaceans (Archaeoceti and Odontoceti) in these beds is the basis for a paleoenvironmental reconstruction which associates these forms as scavenger and prey, respectively. An hypothesis proposes that with a burgeoning whale population during the late Paleogene stranding events became commonplace and in turn provided a new food source for a number of predators and scavengers not the least of which were large coastal plain crocodilians. A taphonomic mode is discussed and faunal associations are presented.
