Contents: We studied rates and patterns of morphological change in the Neogene diatom Nitzschia jouseae Burckle over its known geologic range. The pattern and speed of morphological change was examined using both canonical variates analysis and the Range Test (Bookstein, 1987) and the results compared. The pattern of change of the first canonical variate means conforms to punctuated gradualism. In contrast to this, the Range Test suggests that the lineage exhibited character stasis. Due primarily to the relatively low proportion of total canonical variance accounted for by the first canonical variate we conclude that the Range Test provides the more accurate description of the actual history of the lineage.
