Inhoud: Monarticular (isolated) erosions of a single joint have been a source of confusion and controversy in analysis of anthropologic skeletal populations. While one group perceived that erosions were “part of the normal spectrum of skeletal findings,”; involvement of more than one joint in our experience was noted only in select populations and was not a part of the normal spectrum of skeletal findings. Isolated lesions are clearly more prevalent in populations containing individuals with well recognized polyarticular erosive disorders (rheumatoid arthritis or spondyloarthropathy) or calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease. While isolated erosions were present in 4.56% of 3856 “disease”; population skeletons, they were found in only 0.62% of skeletons from “basically non-erosive”; sites (p<0.01). Notation of significant numbers of individuals with isolated erosions in a population should suggest the presence of rheumatoid arthritis, spondyloarthropathy, or calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease in that population.
