Inhoud: Analysis of teaching and learning needs and the nature of high ability and creativity are shown to be converging on cognitive or thinking abilities. These are found to be underrep-resented in the school curriculum in favour of content orientation and didactic methods, thus it is recommended that critical thinking theory should guide educational practice. Because new methods are difficult to adopt when the teachers' whole learning experiences may have been didactic, it is suggested that teacher education must be changed to mirror these new developments. Evidence has accumulated to show that when this is done teachers can better offer learning experiences that challenge highly able students. The learners themselves both at school and university have found these experiences motivating and relevant. An example of how teacher education methods can be changed is given in relation to a distance education MA programme with some preliminary evaluations.
