In this article, we will examine some of the extensive literature on the nature and nurture of mathematical giftedness in girls. Tannenbaum's “Star” model of giftedness provides a theoretical framework to help organize a large and chaotic body of information and also suggests ways to realize exceptional mathematical potential. It appears that a combination of strategies is needed: early identification of general and special gifts; peer support groups; non-sexist classroom processes; counseling support; provision of female role models; and mentorship. Parents' expectations for their daughters must also be broadened to include school subjects and careers that have been considered male domains. The educational implications of the research results are discussed within the context of the Star conception of giftedness to offer theoretically based, empirical support for efforts to help mathematically talented girls to reach their potential.
