Inhoud: This article discusses a survey of secondary mathematics teachers which was conducted in the spring of 1995. Our purpose was to evaluate the current status of able children as an issue for concern among mathematics teachers and to reveal the range and popularity of different forms of provision for able children. We also wished to compare teachers' perceptions of the nature of children's mathematical ability with those put forward in research. The survey reveals widespread teacher concern for mathematically able pupils. These children are thought to be understretched and frequently deterred by peer group pressure. Teachers feel hindered by constraints on time and material resources and that any available extra provision is targeted towards the least able pupils. A higher value is placed on enrichment and investigative activities than on rapid completion of GCSE2 courses. The priorities of teachers were found to be independent of the academic performance of their schools, although teachers in schools with lower rates of GCSE passes were more concerned about peer pressure and the expectations of teachers. Grouping children by setting was far more popular than streaming. There was strong agreement from teachers for the framework that was proposed to characterise mathematically able children.
