Models of creativity have traditionally overlooked factors of temporality. This theoretical article employs a case study methodology in describing the artist Vincent van Gogh through an analysis of van Gogh's personal letters and notes, to offset this imbalance. The assumption here is that the evolution of skills required for the mastery of a creative domain is developed in a dialectic fashion over time. This dialectical process is planful and purposeful, and requires the coordination of multiple areas of cognitive activity. In service of the above purposes, taking van Gogh as an example, this article discusses: (1) an outline of van Gogh's life, creativity and temporal organization; (2) the mad genius; (3) teleology and creativity; and (4) constructive repetition. |
