Contents: In recent years, vernier operation of single-mode optical fiber ring and loop resonators has attracted considerable attention because the vernier operation can significantly increase the free spectral range of a conventional single-ring fiber resonator, hence, enhancing the applicability of fiber ring and loop resonators. In this paper, we give an overview of the current research in this subject area. We classify the proposed configurations of vernier filters into two categories, that is, the passive one (without an amplifier) and an active one (with an amplifier). The basic operating principles and output characteristics of different configurations are described. The advantages and disadvantages of different schemes and future trends are discussed. It is found that in general the three-(2 × 2)-coupler double-ring resonator and the cascaded one-(3 × 3)-coupler ring resonator are the best among the proposed passive fiber vernier filters and so is the S-shaped double-loop resonator among the proposed active fiber vernier filters.
