The Gordon-Haus limit restricts the distance of repeaterless propagation of solitons. Recently, it was found that judicious placement of filters can extend the limit. This discovery makes soliton communications competitive with other means of long distance signal transmission. This article reviews some properties of solitons, the developments since the first proposal of Hasegawa to use solitons for long distance transmission, and the recent work on control filters. |
