The measured attenuation of single-mode fibers is determined by loss contributions from both the core and the cladding. These regions can have different attenuation characteristics. In such a case, a shift in the ratio of core to cladding power of the LP01 mode, due to a change in the cutoff wavelength, will result in a change of the measured attenuation spectrum. We have developed a technique to separate core and cladding attenuations and, by way of example, use the individual effects of radiation, hydrogen, and impurities on the core and cladding region of single-mode fibers to highlight the usefulness of the technique.
