Presented in this article is a description of two cost models which compare fiber optic interface to alternative wire interconnect for the Airborne Light Optical Fiber Technology (ALOFT) project on the A-7 aircraft. Data for these models were collected on existing components of fiber optics and wire systems. The results of this study indicate that fiber optics, in comparison to most wire alternatives, achieves a significant reduction in total life-cycle cost and at the same time meets or exceeds the future requirements of Electromagnetic Interference (EMI), Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP), and lightning strike vulnerability. |
