Switching in polyvinylidene fluoride under stress

Title: Switching in polyvinylidene fluoride under stress
Author: Al-Jishi, Radi
Appeared in: Ferroelectrics letters section
Paging: Volume 9 (1989) nr. 6 pages 165-171
Year: 1989-01-01
Contents: Polarization reversal in polyvinylidene fluoride (PVF2), under the influence of an applied electric field is reexamined. The interpretation of the nonlinear dependence of the piezoelectric constant d32, on applied stress in the 2-direction in terms of rotation by 60° of chains in PVF2 suggests that a stress in the 2-direction would reduce the time required for dipoles to reverse their orientation in the presence of an electric field. Calculations of the switching time as a function of an applied stress and electric field are presented. It is shown that the application of stress results in a significant reduction of the switching time.
