The variation of the critical temperature, Tc, of LiTaO3 as a function of changing partial pressure of oxygen has been measured, from 1 to 10 kp/cm2, following the changes in the dielectric constant peak in the vicinity of the transition, both with rising and lowering temperature. Between 1 and 3 kp/cm2, Tc raises nearly 3°K and for higher partial oxygen pressures the increase slows down towards saturation. The possible interpretation of this behavior in terms of a decrease in the number of oxygen defective crystal unit cells as the oxygen pressure rises is discussed.
