Inhoud: This paper provides the results of a survey of tutorial classes in the inner London area of the UK. Tutorial classes provide part-time special educational treatment for school-age children who have emotional and behavioural difficulties. The majority of classes were housed in school buildings and each was run by a teacher-in-charge. The classes generally held seven or eight sessions per week with five or six pupils attending each. An average of two or three sessions were open to each pupil. A wide range of activities were provided to help the pupils cope better with their mainstream schooling. The main aim of the classes was to return pupils full-time to mainstream school. The pupils referred to tutorial classes were predominantly male. Almost half of the pupils came from single-parent families. Disruptive and aggressive behaviour were the most frequent reasons for referral.
