Inhoud: Developmental movement refers to the movement education approach developed by Veronica Sherborne (1922-1989), who lived and worked in Bristol, UK. Initially trained in physical education and physiotherapy, and later taught by Laban and Ullman at the Art of Movement Studio in Manchester, Sherborne became involved in movement teaching for children with special needs. For more than 30 years she applied Laban's theories and analysis of human movement to the needs of children with special needs, mainstream children and pre-school children. In Belgium developmental movement, according to the work of Sherborne, is widely used in special needs education. Education workers, teachers and paramedics who use the movement programme are reacting with enthusiasm, and reporting that developmental movement is effective for children with various kinds of special needs. In this paper, we present a theoretical underpinning for developmental movement based on the work of Riksen-Walraven. The affective climate and the style of interaction of the movement teacher are of critical importance in this respect.
