  Special education in Pakistan

Titel: Special education in Pakistan
Auteur: Lari, Zahida S.
Verschenen in: European journal of special needs education
Paginering: Jaargang 11 (1996) nr. 3 pagina's 337-351
Jaar: 1996-10
Inhoud: Special education, as we understand it in the West, is a relatively new development in Pakistan. Fresh interest in the field was aroused by the International Year for Disabled Persons (1981) and by the United Nations declaration of 1983-92 as the Decade of the Disabled. Special education in Pakistan is organized on the basis of four broadly defined categories of disability: mental disability 30 per cent, visual impairment 20 per cent, hearing impairment 10 per cent and physical disability 40 per cent. However, integration on a selective basis has been introduced in some ordinary schools in Sind. In the 1980s, the government undertook a crash programme of expansion of special educational provision greatly improving both the quantity and quality of existing facilities. In the 1990s, the Seventh National Plan envisages consolidation of the system through mobilization of local resources. Great emphasis is also placed on the training of special education teachers and other professionals
