  Learning 'disabilities' revisited

Title: Learning 'disabilities' revisited
Author: Walberg, Herbert J.
Appeared in: European journal of special needs education
Paging: Volume 8 (1993) nr. 3 pages 289-302
Year: 1993-10
Contents: The United States and, to a far lesser extent, some other OECD countries have employed scientifically spurious classifications of alleged 'learning disabled' children (nearly two million in the US alone). Such children are often segregated from other children and placed in special part- or full-time 'pull-out' programs. These programs, though expensive, often result in poor adjustment and inferior academic learning. Because of the administrative complexity, unfairness, and ineffectiveness of such programs, increasing numbers of learning-disabled students are being returned to regular classrooms where a number of effective procedures are being employed to accommodate their special needs.
