Flemming Røgilds is a Danish cultural sociologist and poet, who has written extensively on issues of racism, multiculturalism and hybridity in Denmark, Britain, Germany and South Africa. His work challenges conventional forms of academic writing and theorization - most dramatically in his creation of his fictional travelling alter ego, Charlie Nielsen. In this article, Røgilds reflects on the birth of Charlie Nielsen and on the blurring of boundaries between fiction and ethnography in writing race. In so doing, Røgilds uses a range of authorial voices and styles to disrupt the narrative, and to unsettle the relationship between writer, narrator and reader.
