EXPLICIT OPTIMUM DESIGN TECHNIQUE FOR LINEAR ELASTIC TRUSSES

Title: EXPLICIT OPTIMUM DESIGN TECHNIQUE FOR LINEAR ELASTIC TRUSSES

Contents: This paper presents a numerical implementation or the Explicit Optimum Design method (EOD) as applied to the synthesis of linear elastic trusses. The EOD technique consists of linking an optimization algorithm with an explicit analysis module. Specifically, a mathematical programming algorithm for constrained formulations was used in conjunction with an explicit flexibility analysis method. The analysis space and the design space are both spanned by the vectors of the cross-sections of a statically determinate substructure and the end-loads in the redundant bars. This leads to exact explicit expressions for the objective function and the constraints in terms of the design variables. The method is implemented successfully on a few classical examples of optimal truss design.
