The optimization of the multi-pass machining operation is discussed and a hybrid mathematical optimization technique is presented. The machining process is formulated as a dynamic programming problem in which the stages are considered to be the cutting passes. Each pass is then optimized using geometric programming. To illustrate this technique, a multipass turning operation is presented as an example. Stage charts showing the various alternatives and decisions are presented. Explanations of dynamic programming and geometric programming are included as appendices. |
