A comparison is made of the method of Carroll and Barker and of McNeice and Marcal for obtaining an optimum finite element grid, with an alternate method, The method of Carroll et at., uses nodal coordinate parameters as design variables and employs a numerical optimization algorithm to minimize the potential energy of a system to obtain an optimum grid. That method requires that displacements be repeatedly solved for as a subproblem. The proposed method uses both displacements and nodal coordinate parameters as design variables and thus does not require the solution of a subproblem. Performance of the two methods is compared on test problems. |
